Sl st: Slip stitch
Pattern Notes
This hat is worked in a spiral. Do not join any rows, or turn, unless specifically indicated. I would advise that you use a place marker to help you remember the beginning of each row; moving the place marker to the first stitch of each new row. The hat, including eye holes is made in one
piece. Each ear is made separately then sewn on. The total number of stitches is indicated in parenthesis at the end of each round.
Hat
Round 1: Ch 2; Make 8 hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook (8). Do not join.
Round 2: 2 hdc in each hdc around (16)

Round 4: *Hdc in next 2 sts; 2 hdc in next st*; repeat * around (32)
Round 5: *Hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st*; repeat * around (40)
Round 6: *Hdc in next 4 sts; 2 hdc in next st*; repeat * around (48)
Round 7: *Hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st*; repeat * around (56)
Round 8: Hdc in each st around (56)
Rounds 9 – 22: Repeat round 8°
°At this point, the length of the hat can be adjusted to fit your kiddo. The last round should end right at his eyebrows. Do not fasten off.

Ears (Make 2)
Row 1: Ch 3, Sc in 2nd ch from the hook & in the next ch; ch 1, turn (2)
Row 2: 2 Hdc in the next 2 sts across; ch 1, turn (4)
Row 3: Hdc in 1st hdc & across; ch 1, turn (4)
Row 4: 2 Hdc in the 1st st; hdc in the next 2 sts; 2 hdc in the next st; ch 1, turn (6)
Row 5: Hdc in the 1st hdc & across; ch 1, turn (6)
Row 6: 2 Hdc in the 1st st; hdc in the next 4 sts; 2 hdc in the next st; ch 1, turn (8)
Row 7: Hdc in the 1st st & across; ch 1, turn (8)
Rows 8-17: Repeat Row 7°
°Again, at this point, you can adjust the length. You want each ear to be as tall as your hat. Starting from approximately Row 7 down will be sewn onto the outside of the hat. Do not fasten off
Once you have finished your last row, you will turn your work & begin working a single crochet into each stitch all the around the perimeter of each ear, putting two sc in each corner stitch. This will give you a cleaner edge to your ears. Once you’ve worked all the way around, slip stitch
in the first sc. Fasten off & weave in ends.
Attaching Ears
Thread your tapestry needle with plenty of black yarn.
Place each ear on the outside of the hat starting about 5-6 stitches from the outer edge of each eye hole. I attached mine first with place markers, to help me keep them in place.
Starting with either bottom corner (a corner on the brim of the hat), begin stitching your hat in place.
Place each stitch fairly close together. You want each ear to be secure.
As you stitch up either side of the ear, you will stop and stitch across the ear (toward the other side) a row slightly before it starts to decrease
(approximately Row 6). Just keep in mind the tips of the ears are not to be stitched down to the hat. They are to be sticking up.
Once you have finished stitching the ear on, fasten off & weave in ends.
Additional Notes
If your little nugget has a smaller head, you can omit the last increase (Round 7).
If your little guy has a larger head, or if you’re making this for an adult, you can always add an additional increase round. (*Hdc in next 6 sts, 2 hdc in next st*; repeat * around).
